The Studio

Tuesday evening,
something important
is happening in there.

Young children in white gi uniforms practicing martial arts on padded floor with instructor kneeling beside them

Next class

Wednesday 6:30 PM

Dojo is a neighborhood academy — not a franchise, not a chain. The same instructor who taught the first class eleven years ago still kneels on these mats every Tuesday and Saturday.

We take five-year-olds who can barely tie their shoes and twelve-year-olds who've decided they're not sporty. Both leave changed. The five-year-olds learn to tie a belt. The twelve-year-olds discover discipline nobody had to assign them.

👟

Bare feet on padded floors

The first thing they notice is the squeak of clean mats underfoot. No shoes, no distance — just kids and space.

🥋

Instructors kneel to eye level

We talk to kids at their height. Literally. Every correction is whispered, not announced.

🌸

Small voices counting together

"Ichi, ni, san..." — the count starts quiet and grows until it fills the room. That sound is the whole point.

The Journey

What changes

They walk in small.
They grow here.

We don't promise confidence as a feature. We build the conditions where it grows on its own — repetition, small wins, a room full of kids who've all been the nervous one at the door.

Owen came in convinced he wasn't "sporty." By month three he was the kid encouraging the new students. I didn't recognize him. In the best way.

Ama is the most persistent person I know now. That didn't come from us — it came from this place. From those mats. From earning every single stripe herself.

Rohan's school teacher pulled me aside at conferences. "Whatever you're doing, keep doing it." I told her about Dojo. Now three kids in his class are enrolled.

I'm 68 and I've never seen anything like it. The instructor remembers every child's name, every nervous moment, every breakthrough. Lily talks about Sensei at dinner every night.

What to expect at the first class

Instructor introduces themselves to your child personally — not to you first.

  • 🧘

5-minute warm-up the whole class does together. Nobody sits on the side.

  • 🤸

Basic stances and the first bow. Serious but not scary.

  • 🌸

Cool-down with a short talk about respect. Kids leave calm, not wired.
